چکیده

We present an algorithm with runtime O(knm) for the following NP-complete problem [9, problem GT35]: Given an arbitrary graph G on n vertices and m edges, can we obtain an interval graph by adding at most k new edges to G? This resolves the long-standing open question [17, 7, 25, 14], first posed by Kaplan, Shamir and Tarjan, of whether this problem was fixed parameter tractable. The problem has applications in Profile Minimization for Sparse Matrix Computations [10, 26], and our results show tractability for the case of a small number k of zero elements in the envelope. Our algorithm performs bounded search among possible ways of adding edges to a graph to obtain an interval graph, and combines this with a greedy algorithm when graphs of a certain structure are reached by the search.

Unit Interval Editing is Fixed-Parameter Tractable

Given a graph G and integers k1, k2, and k3, the unit interval editing problem asks whether G can be transformed into a unit interval graph by at most k1 vertex deletions, k2 edge deletions, and k3 edge additions. We give an algorithm solving this problem in time 2 logk) · (n+m), where k := k1 +k2 +k3, and n,m denote respectively the numbers of vertices and edges of G. Therefore, it is fixed-pa...

On the computational complexity of finding a minimal basis for the guess and determine attack

Guess-and-determine attack is one of the general attacks on stream ciphers. It is a common cryptanalysis tool for evaluating security of stream ciphers. The effectiveness of this attack is based on the number of unknown bits which will be guessed by the attacker to break the cryptosystem. In this work, we present a relation between the minimum numbers of the guessed bits and uniquely restricted...

Interval Scheduling and Colorful Independent Sets

Numerous applications in scheduling, such as resource allocation or steel manufacturing, can be modeled using the NP-hard Independent Set problem (given an undirected graph and an integer k, find a set of at least k pairwise non-adjacent vertices). Here, one encounters special graph classes like 2-union graphs (edge-wise unions of two interval graphs) and strip graphs (edge-wise unions of an in...

Tractability of parameterized completion problems on chordal and interval graphs: Minimum Fill-in and Physical Mapping

We study the parameterized complexity of several NP-Hard graph completion problems: The MINIMUM FILL-IN problem is to decide if a graph can be triangulated by adding at most k edges. We develop an O(k 5 mn + f(k)) algorithm for the problem on a graph with n vertices and m edges. In particular, this implies that the problem is xed parameter tractable (FPT). PROPER INTERVAL GRAPH COMPLETION probl...

Strip Graphs: Recognition and Scheduling

We consider the class of strip graphs, a generalization of interval graphs. Intervals are assigned to rows such that two vertices have an edge between them if either their intervals intersect or they belong to the same row. We show that recognition of the class of strip graphs is NP-complete even if all intervals are of length 2. Strip graphs are important to the study of job selection, where w...
